The Beginning of my Yo-Yo Curtains

In our orange and blue room we have some long white curtains hanging over the windows.
I love them, but they are just kinda plain. I had the idea to turn them into a yo-yo curtain. So for about 2 months I have very slowly been making orange and blue yo-yo's. I finally had what I thought would be enough for a row or two on the curtain and figured I'd go ahead and just attach them at the bottom and as I made more, I'd add rows. Well...I found I only had enough for one row, with three yo-yo's left over.

But I have a start, and that one row already adds a fun splash of color.

I think before I add another row on bottom, I'll add one yo-yo to each hanging tab up on the top to help visually balance it out. I'm slowly learning how to decorate, and getting things done piece by piece. I have no idea what I want to do as far as wall hangings yet, so that one picture gets to be the lone ranger for a while.

  1. One thing I'd note is that one panel is not enough curtain for that window. To make them look less blah, I'd add a second panel. You need more drape and less of the tight-pulled look.

I love the rosettes/yo-yos tho. I never learned how to make those and I always thought they were cool looking.

    1. Unfortunately, we only have one panel. I bought it at a thrift store to use for a makeshift nativity costume, never thinking I'd actually hang it up. But then when we moved we actually had a place with tons of windows and I ended up just hanging it because I didn't have anything else. So, one will have to do for now until I either find it's missing twin, or until I find similar fabric.

Yo-yos are easy. Just cut a circle, then do a running stitch around the edge (tucking the raw edge under as you go). Then pull the stitches tight and it gathers into a yo-yo. I bought a little gadget from our local quilt store for about $7 that helps me keep the sizes and stitches all uniform, but you don't need the gadget at all.

  2. Ah right. I have a couple of thrift store finds or panels that worked in previous homes and have no hope of finding a pair for them for larger windows. Have you thought about adding some colorful fabric on the sides to extend the panel and make it wider?

    1. I hadn't thought of that, but it's a great idea. Thanks!

  3. WOW!!! So simple and yet it makes it pop. I agree completely with adding the yoyo to the top parts. I think I might "borrow" that idea for a room.... I really do like it when you have this idea that works. Way to go!!~
